Share a square

Share A Square is a student-run, Bangalore-based initiative, started by two school students, that aims to provide hand-made baby blankets to the homeless for the winter of 2020.

The organization was formed in the May of 2020, and the venture has already received recognition from various organizations. The team has collected over a 1000 squares from all over India and even has international chapters in Texas and Cyprus.

The organization is also expanding its team, contributors and student volunteers. The team does weekly interview segments on Instagram Live with their contributors, and have also conducted many successful SAS webinars to help the contributors that do not know how to crochet, knit or stitch. They have also started a new IGTV series- “Repeat Crafter Me” to instantly teach people.

What they ask is simple; they require squares of 6x6 inches, made using crochet, knitting, or stitching. These squares can be sent to any of the drop-off locations. They then support local tailors who stitch the squares together to make the blankets. Their team will subsequently distribute them to homeless shelters, orphanages and hospitals in need.

Share A Square always believed in simple acts of generosity, but this organisation is about so much more. It believes in the revival of the old handicrafts. It aims to break the stereotype that knitting, stitching and crochet are just old-woman pastimes, and reintroduce these art forms - infused with the spirit of giving. Teaching the youth is the perfect way to breathe back life into these dying arts.

Their motto? Share A Square, to show you care.
